Today is day 16 or 17 of the 33-day consecration to Mary, depending on whether you were ending on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Happy Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the day that we celebrate the conception of Mary. The Father wanted to bring Jesus to earth, but the woman by which Jesus would be born needed to be Holy for His sake. The Immaculate Conception is more about Jesus than it is about Mary. God, who is outside of time, applied the salvation of the cross to Mary in advance. This is why the angel was able to say to Mary, “Hail, full of grace,” and it’s also why Mary said to Elizabeth, “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Mary is God’s highest creation. But she was mother to a Suffering Servant. In serving her Son, she knows what it is to suffer. Mary was found pregnant before marriage and could have been stoned to death. She knows what it’s like to be labeled a sinner. Mary had doors slammed in her face over and over while she was looking for a place to give birth. She knows what rejection feels like. Mary could only afford two turtledoves for Jesus’ presentation. She knows what it’s like to be poor. Mary lost her son for three days. She knows what it’s like to be anxious. Mary watched her son die on the cross. She knows what it’s like to grieve. Mary, whose name means “Bitter” has suffered many things. She knows your suffering well Mary is perfect and extremely relatable at the same time. The Litany of Loretto calls her “Mother Most Admirable” and “Mother Most Amiable.” She is always ready to help or listen or stand in the background until you’re ready. She’s always willing to pray. Holy Mary, Mother Most Pure, be a mother and a friend to us. Today, we consecrate to Mary ourselves, our families, our nation and our church. A Solemn Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Most Holy Virgin Mary, tender Mother of men, to fulfill the desires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the request of the Vicar of Your Son on earth, we consecrate ourselves and our families to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and we recommend to You, all the people of our country and all the world. Please accept our consecration, dearest Mother, and use us as You wish to accomplish Your designs in the world. O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and Queen of the World, rule over us, together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, Our King. Save us from the spreading flood of modern paganism; kindle in our hearts and homes the love of purity, the practice of a virtuous life, an ardent zeal for souls, and a desire to pray the Rosary more faithfully. We come with confidence to You, O Throne of Grace and Mother of Fair Love. Inflame us with the same Divine Fire which has inflamed Your own Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart. Make our hearts and homes Your shrine, and through us, make the Heart of Jesus, together with your rule, triumph in every heart and home. Amen. --Venerable Pope Pius XII
