Today is day 13 or 14 of the 33 Day Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, depending on whether you were ending on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Last night, my youngest asked me to read her a story. I was amazed the Bible story she chose mentioned the same passage from which I had quoted yesterday. That little girl is not aware, but she is SO aware! God bless her! I had written yesterday that Romans 12:19 says the Lord alone takes vengeance. But as I read from that chapter last night, the Lord highlighted verse 15 for me: “Weep with those who weep.” I was thinking about how hard it can be for us to help those who suffer. Scripture gives some examples. The three closest friends of Jesus fell asleep. Then one committed suicide in despair and ten others fled. But one stayed, and I think it was only because he borrowed strength and courage from Mary. John 19 says Mary was with the disciple whom Jesus loved. It can be hard for us as others suffer. We can find it inconvenient or uncomfortable. We might become overwhelmed or feel abandoned. We might be numb in this era of 24-hour news and violent entertainment. But Mary knows how to be with those who suffer. Her authentic love doesn’t run away. She knows when to speak and when to be silent. She knows what to say. She knows how to act and when to hold back. She knows how to pray. Mary has a compassion that we can lack. She spent 33 years with Jesus and learned from Him. Today I pray for those in our lives who are suffering and how we care for them. Mary can teach us true compassion and charity. She can teach us to be merciful, as God is merciful. The buzzword of this time is “kindness.” But true kindness has a Source. May the Lord teach us to be kind. Today we consecrate ourselves, our families, our nation and our Church. A Solemn Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Most Holy Virgin Mary, tender Mother of men, to fulfill the desires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the request of the Vicar of Your Son on earth, we consecrate ourselves and our families to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and we recommend to You, all the people of our country and all the world. Please accept our consecration, dearest Mother, and use us as You wish to accomplish Your designs in the world. O Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and Queen of the World, rule over us, together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, Our King. Save us from the spreading flood of modern paganism; kindle in our hearts and homes the love of purity, the practice of a virtuous life, an ardent zeal for souls, and a desire to pray the Rosary more faithfully. We come with confidence to You, O Throne of Grace and Mother of Fair Love. Inflame us with the same Divine Fire which has inflamed Your own Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart. Make our hearts and homes Your shrine, and through us, make the Heart of Jesus, together with your rule, triumph in every heart and home. Amen. --Venerable Pope Pius XII
