The Answer Doesn’t Always Come When You Expect

“In a time of favor, I answer you (Isaiah 49:8).”

I read that from today’s first reading and thought about the times I sought answers from God.

Have you asked questions of God? I used to be a news reporter; I ask a lot of questions. Some of them are about the world. Some are about other people. Some are about the Lord. A lot of them are about myself.

The Lord has not usually given me answers in the time I wanted. There are some questions I asked eight years ago that are only being answered now. There are questions I have asked for two years that are still not answered. There are some questions that were answered instantly, but then they led to new questions.

The Lord has answered me in a time of “favor.” But the time that is favorable is decided by the Lord. He knew well that I was not perfectly ready for the answer to the question that took eight years. He prepared me in all that time, as slowly as it seemed to me, for the answer. In His wisdom, He knows, and I concede, I am not ready for the answer I have sought for two years.

But Jesus said to be as persistent as the woman who kept asking the judge for a settlement (Luke 18:1-8). And today the Lord promises never to forget us, even if a mother would forget her child (Isaiah 49:15). May we be persistent as we continue to seek. Keep asking and the answer will come in “a time of favor.”

Matthew 7:7  Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
